Essay

In the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie kind of went along with whatever happened. Towards the middle of the book, while married to Jody, she became an individual. She stands up to Jody for what she wants and believes in. In doing this she no longer feels like people control her.
Janie finally gets fed up with Jody insulting her and yelling at her in public. Jody started talking about her being old and ugly, so she said, “ You big-bellies round here and put out a lot of brag, but tain’t nothin’ to it but yo’ big voice”(75). She is saying that all he has is his big voice backing him up and nothing else. After this outburst, she discovers she is her own person. Jody ends up leaving her alone by, “After that night, Jody moved his things and slept in a room downstairs”(77).
When Janie does this it shows that sometimes one has to speak up when one does not believe in something or if one is being oppressed. It teaches me that people are not always right if they are being inimical or rude towards one.
